While Northern Pike are one of the most widely dispersed freshwater fish in the world, a lot of people around the area don’t fish them as heavily as they could for as good of fishing we have in upstate New York. A lot of us in the shop avoid them mostly because they get in the way when we’re targeting perch and bluegill. Though they are a bit of a hindrance when you’re fishing for non-game fish, there is a huge opportunity to fish them for sport. Every year we have a pike derby through the store and the Horning boys always bring in a couple pushing 40 inches. Even further North toward Indian River and up people bring in world class size pike and musky that would give some of these salmon a run for their money so don’t be afraid to try new things and see what you can bring in.
